Visiting Jersey

After St-Malo, we headed to Jersey - one of the Channel Islands, part of the UK - and stayed for 2 weeks. There, people speak English but every street name is French and the island is way closer to the French territory (1h30 from St-Malo, Bretagne) than England. It’s a bit confusing but kind of special at the same time.

Here are the things I wish I had known before heading there:

  • Many cafés and shops close early even during high season.

  • Buses are tiny and tend to get full very quickly when you are heading towards a touristy spot.

  • What they call bread isn’t really #obnoxiousfrenchfoodconnoisseur because something you can categorize into colors (brown or white) cannot be bread.

There is one place that will bake descent bread though and they serve great coffee as well: Dandy. They also have clean toilets which is always a bonus!

Cargo is also a descent café. It’s opposite the bus terminal in St Helier. So in case the bus you were planning to take is full and you have to wait 2 hours for the next one, as it sometimes happens, you could go to that café and catch up on some work or walk around town.

The Lookout Beach Café was my fav dinner place, right at the ocean close to the main town St Hélier.

My favorite beach café was Plemont Beach Café because I got to see Dolphins the 3rd time I went there. And the food is pretty good! There are great coastal hikes to and from there. The color of the water can be emerald at high tide. Check the tide schedule if you want to enjoy the sandy beach though!

And my second favorite beach café was Portelet Bay Café. They make great Pizzas and it’s rather a quiet beach.

The best ‘thing’ on the island were: the people! The locals are sooooo nice! They are very helpful and very happy to share the secrets of their island <3 which was a total contrast to the French! I’m allowed to say that because I’m French myself ;)
